What is Liverpool vs Bournemouth?

Liverpool got their season off and running in devastating fashion, equalling the Premier League’s biggest victory with a 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth at Anfield.

An Anfield crisis is not what it used to be.

They used to last months. At their worst, a couple of seasons. The latest? It could not end more spectacularly, three lacklustre Premier League games eclipsed by a club record 9-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Whatever home truths Jurgen Klopp delivered in his midweek state of the nation address to his players, the message was emphatically received and acted upon.

Bournemouth paid a heavy price as a rejuvenated Liverpool rediscovered their mojo to register their most spectacular top flight win since beating Crystal Palace 9-0 in September, 1989.

For Scott Parker, it was a case of his side being in the wrong place at the wrong time, caught in the red mist and suffering an Anfield backlash of epic proportions following Monday’s loss at Manchester United and the subsequent week of soul-searching.

Liverpool breathed fire on Bournemouth with two goals in the first two six minutes. There were another three before half-time. The Kop spent the climax chanting ‘we want 10’. It could have been double that.

All the criticisms of Klopp’s side in their opening three games – the sloppy starts, the lack of midfield aggression and creativity, the inability of their full-backs to penetrate defensive blocks and the lack of a clean sheet – were dismantled in a scintillating first half when they earned a standing ovation from an audience which arrived amid trepidation. The records were written early.

This was the first time since 1958 Liverpool have scored so many in the first half of a league game. That was in the old second division.

Most reassuringly for Klopp and watching Liverpool owner John W. Henry, this looked like a side intent on ridiculing suggesting they have been sapped of their power and energy after so many arduous campaigns.

What Klopp did after Roberto Firmino sub shows Liverpool question now answered

Of Liverpool’s fabled front three in recent years, Roberto Firmino has continued to be the individual who goes under the radar, writes Tom Cavilla.

Mohamed Salah has found it hard to stay out of the headlines ever since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2017 while it was the turn of Sadio Mane to become the centre of attention in recent months as his transfer to Bayern Munich played out in the media.

For Firmino, however, he has remained a player who has quietly gone about his business both on and off the pitch. It could be argued the Brazilian’s performances have attracted less attention to that of Mane and Salah, but the influence of the former Hoffenheim man is certainly not lost on Jurgen Klopp.
